Velo vs Zyn: Strength, Feel, Price & FDA

Velo is the number-two pouch in America by volume, and it got there by doing the one thing Zyn didn't for years: going moist. The Velo Plus line launched in late 2024 with synthetic nicotine and a softer, wetter pouch, and BAT's own filings say it has since climbed to second place in both volume and value share. Zyn answered in 2026 with Zyn Ultra, which is also moist and goes up to 11 mg.

So the two brands have converged on each other's formats, and "Velo or Zyn?" now means "which Velo, and which Zyn?" Here is the honest comparison, with the measurements where they exist.

Retailers now mostly stock Velo in 4 and 7 mg, so the 2 mg is getting hard to find. Zyn has announced 1.5 mg and 8 mg classic pouches for late 2026, which will widen its range at both ends.

Which hits harder?

This is the question people actually type into ChatGPT, and there is real data on it.

Zyn releases nicotine faster. A 2025 lab study in ACS Omega measured how quickly nicotine crosses an oral membrane from each product, and Zyn came out well ahead of Velo, with the highest permeability of the pouches tested. The reason is pH: Zyn sits around 8.4 to 8.6, Velo around 7.3, and a higher pH means more of the nicotine is in the free-base form that absorbs through the cheek.

Velo's own clinical study puts the peak well below a cigarette. In a BAT-funded pharmacokinetic trial published in 2025, Velo pouches peaked at 6.6 ng/mL for 4 mg, 10.5 for 8 mg and 14.8 for 12 mg, against 27.5 ng/mL for a cigarette in the same participants. The pouches also took 35 to 40 minutes to peak, versus 5 to 7 minutes for smoke. Note that the strengths tested don't exactly match the US shelf line-up.

Which is cheaper?

Per can, they are close. Velo Plus carries a suggested price of $5.59 and Zyn $5.69, and both sell for around $4 to $4.50 a can at large online retailers. The real difference is the count: a Velo can holds 20 pouches, a classic Zyn can holds 15. At the same can price that makes Velo roughly 25% cheaper per pouch. Zyn Ultra closes the gap with a 20-count can.

The number that matters more is how many you go through. The Zyn cost calculator takes pouches per day, pouches per can and your real price, and turns it into a monthly figure. It works for Velo too; just change the count to 20.

Moist vs dry, and synthetic vs tobacco-derived

Moist pouches feel softer and start faster. Velo Plus and Zyn Ultra both add water to the pouch, which is why they feel less like a dry tea bag and why the first minute is stronger. Original Velo and classic Zyn are dry and build more slowly.

Velo Plus is the only one of the four made with synthetic nicotine. Original Velo, classic Zyn and Zyn Ultra all use nicotine extracted from tobacco leaf. Chemically it is the same molecule and your body cannot tell the difference. What synthetic nicotine has meant in practice is regulatory: it was the route brands used to sidestep tobacco-product rules until the FDA closed that door in 2022, and Velo Plus still has no marketing order.

Ingredients are otherwise similar. Plant-fibre filler, sodium carbonates to set the pH, sweeteners and flavourings. Velo Plus uses sucralose; the others use acesulfame K and maltitol.

The FDA question

Zyn is the only pouch brand with the full set. Twenty classic Zyn products got marketing authorization in January 2025, the first ever for nicotine pouches. In June 2026 the same twenty were allowed to carry a modified-risk claim that switching from cigarettes lowers the risk of several smoking diseases. Eleven Zyn Ultra products followed in August 2026.

Velo filed its applications in September 2020 and, as of this writing, has no marketing order. Velo's own FAQ says the FDA has not determined that Velo or Velo Plus present less risk than cigarettes. It is sold under enforcement discretion while the review continues, which is the same footing as most of the market.

None of this makes Zyn safe. An authorization means the FDA judged the product appropriate for public health relative to the alternatives, mostly cigarettes. It says nothing about what nicotine does to someone who was never going to smoke.

Flavors

Velo Plus runs to eleven: Watermelon Chill, Wintergreen, Mint, Wild Berry, Tropical Heat, Spearmint, Citrus Chill, Dragon Fruit, Peppermint, Cappuccino and Smooth. Original Velo has around ten, heavy on mint and wintergreen with Black Cherry, Cinnamon and Coffee. Classic Zyn's ten authorized flavors are Chill, Cinnamon, Citrus, Coffee, Cool Mint, Menthol, Peppermint, Smooth, Spearmint and Wintergreen, with Black Cherry, Peach and Dragonberry added in mid-2026. Zyn Ultra has its own ten.

If fruit is what you want, Velo Plus has more of it. If you want the widest choice of mints, it is a wash.

The part both brands' marketing skips

Whichever can you pick up, 6 mg of nicotine is 6 mg of nicotine. Moist or dry, synthetic or tobacco-derived, BAT or PMI, none of it changes what the dose does to your tolerance or to your withdrawal when you stop. A faster pouch can actually nudge your count up, because a quicker hit invites a quicker next one, and a 20-count can runs out later, which hides the number.

Switching brands feels like a decision. If your quiet goal is to use less, it is a lateral move. The lever is milligrams per day, and the way to move it is to step down by strength on purpose.

The honest bottom line

Velo vs Zyn is a real choice about feel, speed, flavor and price per pouch, and the table above is the honest input. Zyn hits faster and has the FDA paperwork; Velo gives you 20 pouches a can and the bigger fruit range. Ten a day is ten a day in either.
